The Holocaust Poem

written 2018

I am the survived
Who lived to tell the story
Stories of secrets, lies and hurt
Of days kept trapped in a prison
Scarlet red fields lay still evermore
But never will the memories fade

I am the lost
Who was too naive
Who believed there was hope ahead
Treated as vermin, hunted like prey
Days of terror, days of confusion
Like screaming in silence

I am the silenced
Who wasn't given a name, but a number
Taught to be ashamed of who I was
Kept in a room with no way out
Forced to listen to the cries of my loved ones
Treated as an inconvenience
Biting my tongue at harsh remarks

I am the starving
Deprived of basic human needs
Left to rot and fade away into a memory
To watch as my ribs became pointier
And my hands became weaker
My skin turning pale as snow

I am the beaten
Bruises line my face in silent screams
My head hairless and humilating
Days go by like years
Fields of heavy ash among us
Footsteps of those who once were

We are those who once were
Whose lives did not fade in vain
Who fought to be remembered
So you may know our story.
